The Španjola Fortress, perched high above Herceg Novi on Mount Bajer, is an outstanding example of 16th-century military architecture. It was built in 1539 by the Spaniards during their brief one-year rule over the city to secure the strategic entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Shortly after its completion, the Ottomans retook the city and further expanded the fortress, using the name 'Gornji Grad' (Upper Town). The fortress features a square layout with massive walls and round corner towers designed for defense against artillery fire. Over the centuries, it served as an important military post for various powers, including the Venetians and Austria-Hungary. Despite the passage of time and numerous earthquakes, the outer walls and internal structures have remained largely intact. Today, Španjola has visitors one of the best vantage points over Herceg Novi and the entire Boka Bay.

Visiting
Španjola Fortress in Herceg Novi dates from the Spanish occupation period and can be visited. The site is well-preserved and gives a walk through history and architecture.
Typical hours
The fortress has regular opening hours in the main season, usually from 9 AM to 7 PM. In the low season access may be limited - check in advance.

The fortress has a wide-open view of the Bay of Kotor - excellent for panoramic photos. Photography is allowed everywhere, including the inner courtyard.

A visit usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Stroll through the defensive corridors and enjoy the view from the bastions.

The fortress is located above the Old Town and is reachable on foot via stairs and cobbled paths. A taxi can take you to the entrance.
