Forte Mare Fortress in Herceg Novi is an impressive example of maritime military architecture, situated directly on the shore of the Bay of Kotor. It was founded in 1382 by the Bosnian King Tvrtko I to control access to the bay. Over the centuries, various powers, including the Ottomans, Venetians, and Austrians, expanded the facility and reinforced its walls. Its current form mostly dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when defense against pirates and enemy fleets was a top priority. Notable features include thick limestone walls and underground passages that connect the fortress to other parts of the Old Town. Since 1952, the upper plateau of the fortress has been used as an open-air cinema, giving it a unique cultural significance.
