📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Accessing this heart-shaped glacial lake usually requires a demanding hike, often starting from the Bosnian side near Sutjeska National Park. The trail crosses the border region, navigating through deep forests and steep mountain passes.
📅
Best season
The optimal window for this hike is strictly during the summer months, from July to September, when the high passes are reliably clear of snow. This period gives the safest conditions and the most bustling colors of the surrounding nature.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trail to the lake is rugged and strenuous, featuring significant elevation gains and rocky, uneven forest paths. The effort is rewarded by the spectacular amphitheater of high mountains, including Maglić, that steeply surround the water.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality hiking boots and a reliable backpack are absolute necessities for this challenging cross-border trek. Be sure to carry plenty of water, high-energy food, and your passport or ID, as you will be near or crossing international borders.
🅿️
Parking
Most hikers park their vehicles at established trailheads, such as Prijevor in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina, before beginning the trek. From these parking areas, the lake can only be reached by a sustained physical effort on foot.
⚠️
Safety
This is a serious wilderness hike where excellent physical fitness and careful route planning are essential for safety. Hikers must be prepared for extreme isolation, lack of mobile signal, and the physical demands of high-altitude trekking.
⏱️
Time needed
The return hike to the lake is a full-day commitment, typically requiring several hours of strenuous walking in each direction. Many experienced hikers choose to bring camping gear to spend the night by the pristine waters.
