Bjelasica Ridge (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Bjelasica Ridge is the central backbone of the Bjelasica mountain range in northeastern Montenegro. Unlike the rugged, limestone-rich mountains typical of the country, this ridge is characterized by gentle, rounded crests and lush vegetation, owing to its volcanic origin. The geology of Bjelasica ensures water-rich soil with numerous springs and glacial lakes, often referred to as "mountain eyes." Historically, the ridge was a vital area for alpine farming, with its expansive meadows being convenient for livestock breeding during the summer months. The ridge connects several prominent peaks, including Crna Glava and Zekova Glava. Today, the region is a significant hub for tourism, both for winter sports at ski centers like Kolašin 1450 and for hiking and mountain biking in summer. Ecological diversity is high, with dense beech and coniferous forests on the slopes reaching up toward the ridge. A large part of the area belongs to Biogradska Gora National Park, which protects one of the few remaining primary forests in Europe.

🧭
Getting there
The main access point to the ridge is usually from the ski center Kolašin 1600 or from the Biogradska Gora side. A network of dirt roads and hiking trails leads up to the high crests.
📅
Best season
Summer and early autumn are good for hiking the ridge, offering clear views and stable weather. Winter turns the area into a destination for ski touring and snowshoeing.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The Bjelasica mountains are uniquely characterized by their smooth, rolling, grass-covered slopes rather than jagged rocks. This makes the ridge relatively accessible for moderate hiking.
🎒
What to bring
Windproof clothing and sun protection are necessary, as the exposed ridge has little shade. Trekking poles are highly useful for navigating the continuous grassy ascents and descents.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors typically park at the Kolašin 1450 or 1600 ski resort parking areas. These spacious lots are often free or reasonably priced during the summer hiking season.
⚠️
Safety
Weather can change rapidly on the ridge, bringing sudden fog or thunderstorms. Always check the forecast and carry navigation tools, as the grassy terrain can be disorienting in poor visibility.
⏱️
Time needed
Traversing significant sections of the Bjelasica Ridge usually takes between five and eight hours. Shorter round trips to nearby peaks can be completed in half a day.
