Vranjak Pasture (Montenegro)

Weather…

Vranjak is a well-known high plateau and grazing area in the Bjelasica Mountains near Kolašin, situated at an altitude of approximately 1750 meters. It is characterized by gentle, green hills that stand in stark contrast to the rugged limestone landscapes of other Montenegrin ranges. Geologically, the area is based on volcanic rock, which has favored the formation of fertile soils and numerous water springs. Historically, Vranjak is famous for its katuns, traditional mountain huts where shepherds lived during the summer months to produce cheese and dairy products. The climate is pleasantly cool in summer, while winters are snowy, transforming the area into a premier winter sports region. The flora is exceptionally rich in species, including vast meadows with gentian and various types of orchids. Today, Vranjak hosts an eco-village that introduces visitors to the traditional lifestyle of the mountain people. Its proximity to the Biogradska Gora National Park makes it a well-suited starting point for hikes to the region's glacial lakes, such as Lake Pešića.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The approach typically involves driving along mountain tracks from the Bjelasica region. Dirt roads usually lead directly to or very close to the traditional pastoral settlements and the expansive grazing areas.
📅
Best season
Summer is the most animated time when livestock is actively grazing, but late spring to early autumn is generally well accessible. Winter brings heavy snow, making these high-altitude pastures completely unreachable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists mostly of rolling hills and vast grassy meadows, making it relatively gentle compared to rocky mountain peaks. However, natural uneven ground and small ditches are constantly present everywhere.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots are perfectly adequate for the wide grassy terrain. Bring versatile layers for changing mountain weather and substantial sun protection for the unshaded alpine meadows.
🅿️
Parking
Informal parking is usually possible near the traditional shepherd huts or at designated open areas at the very edge of the pastures. Space is rarely strictly structured but generally ample enough for visitors.
⚠️
Safety
Please highly respect the livestock and the local working farm dogs on duty. Keep a very safe distance from the animals and stick to the main tracks to avoid unnecessarily disturbing the traditional grazing areas.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit can range from a relaxing one to two-hour stroll among the rustic huts, to a comprehensive half-day exploration of the wider high-altitude pasture lands and the beautiful viewpoints located nearby.
