Biogradska Virgin Forest Reserve (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Biogradska Gora Virgin Forest Reserve is one of the last three remaining primeval forests in Europe, protected since 1878 by King Nikola I Petrović. Spanning approximately 1,600 hectares, the core zone contains over 86 species of trees, including massive beeches, firs, and spruces that exceed 500 years in age. The forest's ecological processes occur entirely without human interference, allowing for the natural accumulation of fallen timber and the growth of rare fungal species. Located in the Bjelasica Mountains surrounding Lake Biogradsko, the reserve spans altitudes from 850 to 2,122 meters above sea level. The local flora is exceptionally diverse, featuring many Balkan endemic species that thrive in the nutrient-rich, undisturbed soil. This ancient woodland serves as a critical refuge for biodiversity and remains a primary destination for ecological study and conservation research.
