Biogradsko Lake (Montenegro)

Weather…

Biogradsko Lake is the largest and most famous glacial lake within the Biogradska Gora National Park, located in central Montenegro. It sits at an elevation of 1,094 meters, located within one of Europe's last three remaining virgin forests, where trees are known to reach ages of up to 400 years. The lake spans approximately 870 meters in length and has an average depth of 4.5 meters, though this fluctuates significantly with the seasons. It is primarily fed by the Biogradska River and several mountain streams, while its waters drain into the Jezerstica River. The surrounding area has incredible biodiversity, with over 2,000 plant species and a rich variety of wildlife, including bears and eagles. Historically, the area was placed under protection as early as 1878 by King Nikola I Petrović, establishing it as one of the oldest protected sites in the world. A well-maintained educational trail circles the lake, allowing visitors to explore the pristine landscapes of the Bjelasica mountain range.
