Brada Peak is an impressive elevation in the Durmitor Mountains of northern Montenegro, reaching a height of 2045 meters. Located centrally within the massif, it is particularly known for its distinctive shape, often compared to a 'beard', which gave the mountain its name. Geologically, Brada consists of heavily folded limestone and dolomite, typical of the tectonic processes that shaped the Dinaric Alps. Historically, the peak served as a natural landmark for shepherds moving their flocks to Durmitor's high pastures during the summer months. From its summit, hikers can enjoy spectacular views of the Black Lake (Crno Jezero) and the deep canyons of the Tara and Draga rivers. The flora on Brada is strictly alpine, featuring edelweiss and other protected species that thrive in rocky crevices. The mountain is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site and is a popular destination for hikers departing from Žabljak. Climatic conditions are extreme, with long-lasting snow caps often visible well into the early summer.

Reaching the vicinity of Brada Peak generally requires driving along mountain roads in the central highlands. Hikers typically begin their ascent from remote pastoral settlements or designated mountain passes.

Late spring through early autumn is the recommended time for an ascent. Winter conditions make the steep, rocky slopes treacherous and should only be attempted by experienced mountaineers.

The final approach involves steep, rugged inclines characterized by rocky structures and loose scree. Agility and a steady foot are required to safely navigate the demanding alpine environment.

What to bring

High-cut hiking boots with excellent grip are absolutely essential for the rocky terrain. Carry plenty of water, high-energy snacks, and a reliable topographical map of the central highlands.

Parking is informal and usually found at the widened curves of mountain access roads or near small rural communities at the base. Ensure your vehicle does not block local agricultural traffic.
