Virpazar is a pretty settlement on the shores of Lake Skadar and serves as the primary hub for exploring the national park. Originally a major marketplace (Pazar), today it is famous for its old stone bridge and cozy canal-side restaurants. Overlooking the village is the 15th-century Besac Fortress, built by the Ottomans, which features sweeping views of the lake's wetlands and surrounding mountains. The village is the heart of the Crmnica wine region, meaning visitors can enjoy wine tastings in numerous family-run cellars. Traditional wooden boats depart from the harbor throughout the day, taking tourists to see water lily fields and medieval island monasteries. Local specialties like smoked carp and Vranac wine are highlights of any visit. Virpazar is exceptionally well-connected, with a stop on the main Belgrade-Bar railway line and easy car access from both Podgorica and the coast. It is a first-rate spot for a tranquil day trip or a base for active nature tourism.
