Guraidhoo Channel Marine Area (Maldives)

Weather…

Guraidhoo Channel Marine Area, commonly known as Guraidhoo Corner, is a premier protected marine site located at the eastern edge of South Malé Atoll. This spot is world-renowned among diving enthusiasts for its exhilarating drift dives and high concentration of large pelagic species. Positioned at a major channel entrance, the site experiences powerful tidal currents that funnel nutrient-rich water, attracting grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and massive schools of fusiliers. The underwater topography is characterized by a dramatic drop-off featuring numerous overhangs and caves encrusted with spirited soft corals and sea fans. Designated as a Marine Protected Area in 1995, it remains one of the most biodiverse spots in the central atolls. For divers, the experience often involves 'hooking' onto the reef edge to watch the spectacular procession of marine life swimming against the current. Its proximity to the local island of Guraidhoo makes it highly accessible for visitors staying at both guesthouses and nearby luxury resorts.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time for the Guraidhoo Channel area is during the southwest monsoon from May to November, when currents bring nutrient-rich water into the channel. From June to September, chances of spotting large pelagic fish such as tuna and mackerel are highest.
🌅
Best time of day
The current is strongest during the incoming tide, about two to three hours after high water - this is the optimal time for observing large fish. Early morning hours between 7 and 10 AM often offer the calmest surface conditions.
📜
Etiquette
Diving or snorkeling in the main current is only safe for experienced water sports enthusiasts - beginners should stick to calmer areas. Feeding fish is prohibited, and touching mantas or sharks is strictly forbidden.
🎒
What to bring
Good diving gear with a current line and signal buoy is essential for safe drift dives in the channel. Bring a camera with high ISO sensitivity to capture the fast pelagic fish in motion.
🧭
Getting there
The Guraidhoo Channel is located in South Malé Atoll and can be reached from Malé by speedboat in about 30 minutes. Many dive centres around Guraidhoo offer daily trips to the current diving sites.
🦌
What to expect
Pelagic fish are wanderers - even on good days it may take a while for a school of tuna or sharks to pass through the channel. Let yourself drift with the current and enjoy the dynamics of the water while waiting for the big fish.
