Vilnius University Botanical Garden
The Vilnius University Botanical Garden, founded in 1781, is the largest institution of its kind in Lithuania and plays a pivotal role in the nation's botanical research and education. Originally established in the old town of Vilnius, the vast majority of the garden is now located in the suburban district of Kairėnai, situated on the expansive grounds of a historic estate. Covering nearly 200 hectares, the garden has an incredible botanical diversity, cultivating over 10,000 different plant taxa sourced from around the globe. The Kairėnai garden is particularly celebrated for its spectacular specialized collections, which include one of the largest lilac collections in the Baltic states, sweeping rhododendron groves, and a magnificent, intricately designed rose garden. Beyond its significant scientific mission of preserving plant biodiversity and managing a seed bank, the Botanical Garden serves as a beloved public recreation area. With its scenic ponds, restored historic manor buildings, and open-air summer concerts, it has become a lively cultural gathering place.
