Vilnius Cathedral (Lithuania)

Weather…

Vilnius Cathedral, officially dedicated to Saints Stanislaus and Ladislaus, is the most prominent Catholic place of worship in Lithuania. The Neoclassical building, characterized by its massive Doric columns and three prominent statues on the roof, was completed in its current form at the end of the 18th century based on the designs of architect Laurynas Gucevičius. The site at the foot of the Castle Hill has hosted various church buildings since the 13th century, which were frequently destroyed by fires. The freestanding 57-meter-tall bell tower originally served as a defensive tower for the Lower Castle and now dominates the Cathedral Square. Inside the basilica, important historical figures are buried, including Grand Duke Vytautas the Great and King Alexander of Poland. During the Soviet occupation, the cathedral was converted into an art gallery before being returned to the Catholic Church in 1989.
