St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kaunas, locally often referred to as 'Soboras,' is a monumental example of Neo-Byzantine architecture in the Baltic states. It was built at the end of the 19th century (1891-1895) originally as a Russian Orthodox garrison church for the personnel of the Kaunas Fortress. The building dominates the eastern end of Laisvės alėja (Liberty Avenue) and is visible from afar by its five blue domes and massive white walls. After Lithuania gained independence, the church was converted into a Catholic garrison church. During the Soviet era, the building was repurposed as an art gallery, and its religious interior was largely removed or covered. The architecture is characterized by Corinthian columns, decorative cornices, and an impressive central dome with a diameter of 16 meters. Today, it serves as a Catholic church again and stands as an important architectural monument reflecting the diverse history and military significance of Kaunas.
