The Lithuanian Zoo (Lietuvos zoologijos sodas), located in the city of Kaunas, holds the distinction of being Lithuania's only state-run zoo and a premier institution for wildlife conservation. It was founded in 1938 by the eminent naturalist Tadas Ivanauskas. Set within a heavily wooded area of nearly 16 hectares, beautifully bisected by the Girstupis stream valley, the zoo provides an easy on the eye and naturalistic environment for both its animal residents and visitors. Today, the facility is home to approximately 2,000 animals representing about 200 diverse species, ranging from exotic big cats and primates to hardy northern mammals and a wide array of avifauna. The zoo places a strong emphasis on the conservation of endangered European and regional species. It is a highly active participant in international breeding and reintroduction programs, particularly focusing on the preservation of the European bison, the European mink, and various reptile species. Through comprehensive educational programs, the zoo aims to foster a deeper understanding of global biodiversity conservation.
