St. George's Church Kaunas (Lithuania)

Weather…

St. George's Church in Kaunas is one of the oldest and most valuable examples of Brick Gothic architecture in Lithuania. It was built at the end of the 15th century (c. 1471-1492) along with the adjacent Bernardine monastery, located in close proximity to Kaunas Castle. The structure is characterized by its massive walls, distinctive Gothic pointed arches, and impressive ribbed vaults. Throughout its long history, the church was damaged several times by fires and wars, and Baroque elements were added to the interior in the 17th and 18th centuries. During the Napoleonic Wars and the Soviet era, the building was used for secular purposes, including as a flour and medicine warehouse, leading to significant decay of its valuable frescoes and altars. Since being returned to the church in the 1990s, the complex has been undergoing gradual restoration to recover its spiritual and art-historical significance. Today, the church stands as an important cultural monument that keeps the medieval history of Kaunas alive.
