The Open Air Museum in Rumšiškės is one of the largest and most impressive ethnographic exhibitions in Europe, keeping Lithuania's diverse rural heritage vibrantly alive. Spread across a vast area of nearly 200 hectares on the shores of the Kaunas Reservoir, over 140 historical buildings have been meticulously relocated here from all five ethnographic regions of Lithuania (Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, Suvalkija, Sūduva, and Minor Lithuania) since its founding in 1966. Visitors can explore faithfully reconstructed traditional villages, thatched farmhouses, towering windmills, wooden churches, and artisan workshops dating from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Walking through the expansive grounds features profound insights into the harsh daily lives, lively traditions, and distinct architecture of Lithuanian ancestors. Regular folk festivals, traditional craft demonstrations, and live music truly turn the museum into a cultural time machine.

Visiting
The open-air museum is fully walkable, displaying traditional Lithuanian buildings outdoors. Most houses can be entered inside, furnished with historic furniture and tools. Entry is usually through the main gate, where the visitor center is located.
Typical hours
The museum is typically open daily from May to October, often from 10:00 to 18:00. Outside the season, hours are very limited or by appointment only. It is advisable to check the current hours on the official website before visiting.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the outdoor area without restriction for personal use. Inside most buildings, flash is typically prohibited to protect the historic exhibits. Drone photography usually requires prior permission from the museum administration.
Time needed
Allow at least two to three hours for a thorough walk to explore the over 140 buildings. If you also want to watch craft demonstrations and exhibitions, you can easily spend half a day here.

The museum is about 20 kilometers east of Kaunas, making it easy to combine with a city visit. The nearby Kaunas Reservoir also provides a nice boat trip or a walk along the shore.
Getting there
By car, take the A1 highway, exit Rumšiškės, then a short drive. Free parking is available right at the main entrance. Public buses run regularly from Kaunas bus station to Rumšiškės, taking about 30 minutes.
Insider tip
Visit the museum early in the morning to avoid the busiest times with coach groups and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Wear sturdy footwear because the paths between buildings are often unpaved and can be muddy in rain.
