Pažaislis Monastery (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Pažaislis Monastery is a radiant jewel of mature Baroque architecture and a masterpiece of European art in Northern Europe. It was founded in 1662 by the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas, for the ascetic Camaldolese order. The design was entrusted to renowned Italian architects like Giovanni Battista Frediani, bringing Lombardian elegance to Lithuania. The monastic complex is celebrated for its hexagonal domed church, ornate stucco moldings, and exquisite frescoes painted by Michelangelo Palloni. Converted into an Orthodox monastery in the 19th century, it suffered severe damage during the World Wars. Today, the restored ensemble on the shores of the Kaunas Reservoir shines once again, housing a convent of sisters and hosting a prestigious annual classical music festival.
