Juniper Valley, or Kadagių slėnis in Lithuanian, is a botanical natural monument of exceptional beauty stretching along the steep shores of the Kaunas Reservoir near Arlaviškės. It is widely renowned for its dense, naturally grown stand of common juniper, a rare sight in such high concentration within Lithuania. The nearly 1.3-kilometer-long wooden boardwalk that runs along the cliff edge provides visitors with a spectacular panorama: on one side, the broad, blue waters of the reservoir and the islands of the Nemunas river loops; on the other, the steep slopes covered with deep-green juniper bushes. The valley is home to a unique microclimate; the sun-drenched steep slopes absorb heat, favoring the growth of the junipers and other heat-loving, often rare, plant species. The aroma of essential oils that fills the air, especially on warm summer days, turns a walk here into an almost therapeutic experience.

Getting there
Located near Arlaviškės, this valley is easily reached by a short drive from Kaunas. A prominent, well-maintained cognitive walkway starts directly at the valley's edge.
Best season
While accessible year-round, late spring and summer highlight the lively green junipers and pleasant microclimate. Clear days provide striking vistas over the Kaunas Reservoir.
Terrain & paths
The primary route features a flat, accessible wooden boardwalk running along the upper ridge of the valley. Off-boardwalk sections feature steeper, uneven natural slopes.
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes are entirely sufficient for traversing the main wooden boardwalk. Bringing a camera is almost mandatory to capture the spectacular reservoir views.
Parking
A specific gravel parking lot is situated right at the entrance of the valley's trail. It tends to fill up rapidly on sunny weekends, so arriving early in the day is advisable.
Safety
Visitors must stay on the designated boardwalk to protect the fragile juniper ecosystem and avoid steep drops. The wooden planks can be quite slippery in wet or frosty conditions.
Time needed
A leisurely stroll along the main walkway and back generally takes between 1 and 1.5 hours. It is a highly popular spot for relatively quick, scenic nature walks.
