Open-Air Museum of Lithuania (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Open-Air Museum of Lithuania in Rumšiškės, situated on the scenic shores of the Kaunas Reservoir, is one of the largest and most fascinating ethnographic open-air museums in Europe. Established in 1966, the museum spans nearly 200 hectares and showcases the rural architecture and traditional lifestyle of Lithuania's four historical regions: Aukštaitija, Samogitia, Dzūkija, and Suvalkija. Across the extensive grounds, approximately 150 authentic 18th- and 19th-century buildings have been meticulously reconstructed, including thatched-roof farmhouses, wooden windmills, artisan workshops, and a completely recreated small town with a central market square. The museum comes alive through interactive demonstrations where craftsmen exhibit traditional techniques such as weaving, pottery, and blacksmithing. The site is particularly animated during national festivals like Užgavėnės (Shrove Tuesday) and Joninės (Midsummer), when folk dances and traditional songs are celebrated with great enthusiasm.
