Pasvalys Church (Lithuania)

Weather…

The St. John the Baptist Church in Pasvalys is an outstanding example of Baroque sacred architecture in northern Lithuania. The current masonry building was constructed between 1776 and 1787 on the site of an earlier 15th-century wooden church. The facade is noted for its harmonious proportions and striking twin towers, which were added later in the 19th century. The church interior is richly decorated and houses valuable works of art, including an elaborately carved main altar and rare paintings from the late Baroque period. The church has always been a cultural center for the town of Pasvalys, having hosted a parish school in the past that contributed to the education of the local population. In the 1950s, the building underwent extensive renovation to repair war damage and protect its valuable ceiling paintings. Today, the church is a major protected monument and serves as a living testimony to the Catholic tradition in the Aukštaitija region. Its location near the confluence of the Lėvuo and Pyvesa rivers gives the site a particularly scenic quality.
