Visaginas is the youngest city in Lithuania, established in 1975 as a planned settlement for the workers of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. Located in the far northeast of the country, the city is tucked away within dense pine forests and sits near Lake Drūkšiai, Lithuania's largest lake. The urban layout is unique, with buildings arranged in the shape of a butterfly to minimize the impact on the original forest landscape. Visaginas is notable for its multi-ethnic population, as specialists from across the former Soviet Union were brought in to build and operate the power station. Since the final decommissioning of the nuclear plant in 2009, the city has been undergoing an economic transformation towards new industries and tourism. Its modernist architecture, forest setting, and cultural diversity make Visaginas a distinct example of 20th-century urban planning within a post-Soviet context.
