Mūša-Nemunėlis Valley

The Mūša-Nemunėlis Lowland in northern Lithuania is a geologically fascinating region, primarily known for its karst phenomena. Beneath a relatively thin layer of glacial deposits lie layers of gypsum, dolomite, and limestone from the Devonian period. When groundwater dissolves these soluble rocks, underground cavities are formed, which eventually collapse to create sinkholes or dolines. Particularly in the area around Biržai, thousands of these craters can be found, some of which are filled with water. The Mūša and Nemunėlis rivers flow north through this plain toward Latvia, having formed broad, flat valleys. Agricultural use in the karst areas is restricted by special regulations to protect the groundwater from pollution. The region is a major site for the extraction of building materials such as dolomite, which is mined here in large quarries.
