Cow's Cave (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Cow's Cave, locally known as 'Karvės ola', is the most fascinating and thoroughly researched geological phenomenon in northern Lithuania, located near Biržai. This impressive karst sinkhole, an almost perfectly circular, funnel-shaped collapse crater, was formed by the continuous underground dissolution of thick gypsum layers by groundwater. According to local legend, the cave acquired its curious name after a cow disappeared without a trace into the suddenly opening abyss. Today, visitors can safely descend into the depths of the funnel via a wooden staircase; hidden at the bottom are five small cave galleries and an underground lake containing ice-cold water. The entire area around Biržai is characterized by such karst phenomena, rendering the landscape subject to constant change. Geologists regularly monitor the Cow's Cave to study the dynamic interaction between water and rock within this unique formation.
