Joniškėlis Manor (Lithuania)

Weather…

Joniškėlis Manor, also known as the Karpiai (Karpis) Estate, is a significant monument to Lithuanian noble culture and educational reform. Owned by the Karpis family from the 18th century until 1940, the estate became a center for progressive ideas. The current Classicist manor house was built in the early 19th century as part of a large and efficient farming operation. The estate is most famous for the 1808 will of Ignotas Karpis, who abolished serfdom on his lands and provided funds for a local hospital and school, a revolutionary act in the Russian Empire at the time. The agricultural school established here was one of the first in the Baltic region. The manor ensemble includes various outbuildings and a scenic landscape park. Today, it serves as a cultural hub, reflecting the enlightened legacy of the Karpis family and their impact on the social development of northern Lithuania.
