Kaunas Castle is the oldest masonry fortress in Lithuania, constructed in the 14th century at the strategically vital confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. Its primary objective was to block the advance of the Teutonic Knights into the Lithuanian heartland, making it the site of numerous medieval sieges. In 1362, the Gothic stronghold was captured and largely destroyed by the crusaders, but it was later rebuilt and reinforced with thicker walls by the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Although only about a third of the original complex survives today, the massive round tower and the remaining defensive walls reflect its historical military significance. The restored tower now houses a branch of the Kaunas City Museum, which exhibits ancient weaponry and historical artifacts. The surrounding riverside area has been transformed into a popular park for public events and leisurely walks.
