The Mohale Dam is an impressive engineering feat and a central component of Phase 1B of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). Located on the Senqunyane River in the central highlands of Lesotho, it was constructed between 1998 and 2002. Standing 145 meters high, it is the highest concrete-faced rock-fill dam in Africa. The reservoir primarily serves to store water, which is transferred via a 32-kilometer-long tunnel to the Katse Reservoir for eventual export to South Africa. The dam's construction had significant socio-economic impacts on the region, including the resettlement of local communities and the improvement of infrastructure, such as the building of the 'Mountain Road'. Ecologically, a careful monitoring program was implemented to mitigate impacts on local flora and fauna, particularly the endangered Maloti minnow, ensuring environmental standards were met.

The dam is conveniently reached via an excellently paved and exceptionally scenic mountain road leading from Maseru. The route is entirely accessible for conventional standard vehicles and does not necessitate the use of four-wheel drive at all.

The facility can be wonderfully visited year-round. Summer usually displays the massive reservoir at its absolute fullest, while winter provides crystal-clear days for photography, though these can frequently be accompanied by chilly and biting winds.

A quality windbreaker is highly recommended due to the strong gusts that frequently sweep unhindered across the vast expanse of open water. Wear comfortable walking shoes and remember to apply sun protection, as natural shade is extremely rare on the site.

There are formal, well-paved parking lots available directly at the main visitor center, as well as at designated viewpoints overlooking the gigantic concrete wall. The parking areas are safe, well-marked, and generally very easy to navigate with any car.

For your absolute safety, always remain securely behind all marked barriers and railings at the dam wall and viewing platforms. Furthermore, be constantly prepared for sudden, powerful wind gusts whenever you are walking near the edges of the precipice.
