Ha Baroana is a globally significant archaeological site in the Maseru District, located about 40 kilometers east of the capital. The site is world-famous for its extensive and well-preserved San (Bushman) rock paintings, situated under a massive sandstone overhang on the banks of the Liphiring River. The artworks depict a wide array of motifs, including hunting scenes, dances, and animals such as eland and lions, providing invaluable insights into the spiritual beliefs and daily lives of the indigenous people from thousands of years ago. Geographically, Ha Baroana is positioned in a scenic river bend where erosion has sculpted spectacular geological features. The name translates to 'Home of the Little Bushmen.' The site is a protected national monument and serves as a major destination for cultural tourists and researchers of African prehistory. Despite natural weathering over time, these paintings remain some of the most important examples of rock art in Southern Africa.
