Maphutseng is a village located in the Mohale's Hoek District of southwestern Lesotho, globally renowned for its extraordinary paleontological significance. In the 1950s, researcher Paul Ellenberger discovered extensive fossil deposits here, most notably dinosaur footprints dating back to the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic periods. The Maphutseng tracks are among the best-preserved examples of dinosaur ichnology in Southern Africa, attracting scientists and researchers from across the globe. Geographically, the settlement is located in a rugged valley where erosion has exposed the ancient rock layers of the Stormberg Group. The local community primarily engages in subsistence farming and traditional crafts. Beyond its scientific importance, Maphutseng features unique insights into Basotho rural life in a landscape defined by extreme weather and striking geological formations. The preservation of these prehistoric sites is a central focus for Lesotho's cultural tourism and heritage conservation efforts.
