Limone sul Garda, situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Garda in Lombardy, likely derives its name from the Latin 'Limes' (border) rather than lemons. However, the town's identity has been shaped by its 'Limonaie' (lemon houses) since the 13th century. These massive stone pillar structures were designed to protect citrus trees from winter frosts. The village gained international scientific fame when researchers discovered a specific protein, 'Apolipoprotein A-1 Milano,' in the residents' blood, which provides protection against atherosclerosis and contributes to exceptional longevity. For centuries, Limone remained isolated and reachable only by boat until the Gardesana road was completed in 1932. Today, a major attraction is the spectacular cycling path opened in 2018, which is partially suspended from the cliffs directly over the water.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
