Menaggio is the main tourist hub on Lake Como's western shore, offering an excellent blend of alpine backdrop and Mediterranean flair. Its elegant waterfront promenade is lined with palm trees and flower beds, leading to the bustling Piazza Garibaldi. The upper part of town, known as the Castello district, retains a medieval character with narrow alleys and remains of ancient fortifications. Menaggio is especially popular with active travelers, as numerous hiking trails lead from here into the mountains and the pristine Val Sanagra. It is also home to the Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club, founded in 1907. Overlooking the town is Villa Vigoni, which now serves as a German-Italian center for cultural and scientific exchange.
