Piz Roseg (Switzerland)

Weather…

Piz Roseg is one of the most significant and visually striking mountains in the Bernina Range, located in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and reaching an elevation of 3937 meters. It is situated south of Pontresina and west of Piz Bernina, separated from its higher neighbor by the Porta da Roseg pass. The mountain is famous for its two distinct summits: the main peak and the slightly lower, snow-capped Schneekuppe (3920 m). Its northeast face is home to one of the most celebrated ice walls in the Alps, posing a major challenge to mountaineers worldwide. The first ascent was achieved on June 28, 1865, by A. W. Moore, Horace Walker, and the guide Jakob Anderegg via the current normal route. Geologically, Piz Roseg is part of the Bernina crystalline complex, consisting mainly of granite and diorite. In modern mountaineering, the peak is world-renowned for its aesthetic form and demanding routes such as the Eselsgrat ridge. It features spectacular views over the Roseg Glacier and the corresponding valley.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to Piz Roseg is usually from Pontresina through Val Roseg to the Tschierva Hut. Travel to Pontresina is easily possible with the Rhaetian Railway or by car via well-maintained roads.
📅
Best season
The best time for high-altitude tours is in mid-summer, July and August, when the ice conditions are stable. For ski tours in spring, very good avalanche knowledge and experience are prerequisites.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
This is extremely challenging terrain with glaciers, steep ice walls, and exposed rocky ridges. The ascent is reserved for experienced alpinists who are confident in navigating combined terrain.
🎒
What to bring
Complete high-altitude climbing gear, including crampons, ice axe, rope, and helmet, is mandatory. Warm, insulating clothing is also important due to the high altitude and extreme cold on the mountain.
🅿️
Parking
Parking spaces are available at Pontresina station or at the entrance to the village, as Val Roseg is largely car-free. Horse-drawn carriages or a local shuttle can be used for the way into the valley.
⚠️
Safety
The danger of glacial crevasses and icefall is omnipresent and requires constant attention and care. An ascent should only be carried out in stable weather and ideally in roped teams for safety.
⏱️
Time needed
A tour to the summit usually takes eight to twelve hours from the Tschierva Hut for the entire day. Due to the technical difficulties, you should plan a sufficient time buffer for the safe return.
