Castle of Szigetvár (Hungary)

Weather…

The Castle of Szigetvár is one of the most significant historical fortresses in Hungary, famously known as the site of a heroic siege in 1566. Miklós Zrínyi, a Croatian-Hungarian nobleman, defended the fort with about 2,500 soldiers against the massive Ottoman army of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, which numbered over 100,000. Although the defenders eventually fell, their sacrifice halted the Ottoman advance toward Vienna and marked a turning point, as Sultan Suleiman himself died during the siege. Today, the fortress is a National Memorial site, featuring a blend of medieval military architecture and Ottoman relics, such as the Mosque of Suleiman and a minaret. The castle's museum, located within the 19th-century Andrássy Palace inside the walls, provides a detailed account of the historic battle and the era of Turkish occupation. It stands as a powerful symbol of European resistance and bravery, attracting history enthusiasts and tourists from all over the world to its atmospheric grounds.
