Jakab Hill
Jakab Hill is a 602-meter peak in the Western Mecsek Mountains, distinguished by its unique geological formations and rich historical heritage. The mountain is primarily composed of characteristic Permian red sandstone, which erosion has shaped into spectacular forms such as Zsongor-kő or the 'Babás Szerkövek' rock towers. Historically, the area was inhabited as early as the Iron Age, featuring the remains of one of the largest Celtic earthworks in Central Europe, with its ramparts still clearly visible. The summit plateau hosts the ruins of a Pauline monastery founded in 1225, which was one of the earliest centers of the only male religious order of Hungarian origin. Archaeological excavations and ruin conservation make the site a significant cultural heritage area. The vegetation is dominated by sessile oak and hornbeam forests, while the rock formations support specialized plant communities. The hill is a major hub for hiking in the Baranya region.
