Lake Deseda is the longest artificial lake in Hungary, located just north of the city of Kaposvar. It was created in 1974 by damming the Deseda Creek, primarily for flood protection and recreational purposes. The lake stretches approximately 8 kilometers in length and covers a surface area of about 245 hectares. Its diverse shoreline includes a peninsula hosting a significant arboretum with many exotic tree species. Deseda is a popular destination for anglers, renowned for its abundant fish stock, particularly large carp and grass carp. A well-maintained cycling path encircles the entire lake, making it a hub for local sports and outdoor activities. At its southern end, a modern visitor center provides educational exhibits on the lake's ecology and the surrounding natural environment.

Getting there
Lake Deseda is easily reached via well-paved roads just north of Kaposvár, with clear signage directing visitors from the city center. Public buses from the town also frequently serve the lake, making it highly accessible without a personal car.
Best season
Summer is the peak season for swimming, cycling the perimeter, and family picnics along the shores. However, autumn provides an impressive display of colorful foliage reflecting on the water, while winter allows for ice skating if it freezes.
Terrain & paths
The artificial lake features heavily groomed shorelines surrounded by forested patches and an excellent, fully paved cycling path wrapping around it. The walking trails are mostly flat, exceptionally clear, and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
What to bring
Bicycles, inline skates, and comfortable walking shoes are well-suited for navigating the comprehensive trail network. In summer, typical beach gear, sunscreen, and picnic provisions are all you need to fully enjoy the recreational areas.

Several large, organized parking areas are situated near the main entrance points and visitor facilities. These spots are highly convenient, but they can fill up rapidly on sunny summer weekends, so arriving early is often recommended.
