Zselic (Hungary)

Weather…

Zselic is a hilly region in southwestern Hungary, spanning across Somogy and Baranya counties. It is characterized by deep, narrow valleys, extensive beech and oak forests, and a relatively low population density. The region is geographically distinct for its unique microclimate and diverse flora, including several protected plant species. In 2009, a large part of the area was designated as the Zselic Starry Sky Park, one of the first International Dark Sky Parks in Europe, due to its exceptionally low light pollution. This makes it a prime location for astronomical observations and eco-tourism. The highest point of the landscape is Hollófészek, reaching an elevation of 358 meters above sea level.

Visiting
The Zselic region welcomes nature enthusiasts to explore its gently rolling hills, deep forests, and tranquil valleys. It is a largely open landscape where visitors can freely hike or cycle along designated trails.

The untouched woodlands and traditional rural landscapes offer peaceful natural vistas. However, the true photographic highlight here is astrophotography; due to minimal light pollution, the night sky reveals the Milky Way in extraordinary detail.
⏱️
Time needed
A casual walk or cycle through the forests might take half a day, but to truly experience the area and participate in an evening stargazing program, you should plan to spend a full day and overnight in the region.
Combine with
A visit to Zselic pairs wonderfully with exploring the nearby city of Kaposvár, known for its appealing downtown area, secessionist architecture, and bustling cultural life, providing a nice urban contrast to the deep forests.
🧭
Getting there
The area is best accessed by car from Kaposvár, which is the main gateway to the Zselic region. Local buses do serve some of the smaller villages, but having your own vehicle is crucial for reaching the Starry Sky Park and remote trailheads.
💡
Insider tip
If you plan to visit the Zselic Starry Sky Park for a night-time program, be sure to book your tickets well in advance, check the lunar calendar for the darkest nights, and dress warmly, as it can get quite chilly even in summer.
