Fekete-viz River (Hungary)

Weather…

The Fekete-viz (Black Water) is one of the most significant watercourses in Baranya County, southern Hungary, and a right-bank tributary of the Drava River. The river drains an extensive area including the southern slopes of the Mecsek Mountains and the vicinity of the Villany Mountains. With a total length of approximately 85 kilometers, the Fekete-viz plays a central role in the hydrology of the Ormansag region, an area historically known for its vast marshlands and floodplain forests. In the mid-20th century, the riverbed was extensively regulated and channelized to increase agricultural land and improve flood protection. Despite this, ecologically valuable sections still exist along the river, preserving gallery forests and wet meadows that provide important habitats for amphibians and waterfowl. Water quality is influenced by agricultural activities and local industry, but modern water management plans aim to improve the ecological state and restore more natural conditions.
