Pécs Cathedral
The St. Peter and St. Paul's Cathedral in Pécs is one of Hungary's most iconic architectural landmarks, famous for its four distinctive towers that define the city's skyline. Its foundations date back to the late Roman period in the 4th century, while the core Romanesque structure was established in the 11th century during the reign of King Saint Stephen. Throughout the centuries, the cathedral has undergone various transformations, including its use as a mosque during the Ottoman occupation in the 16th and 17th centuries. The current Neo-Romanesque appearance is the result of a massive reconstruction project led by architect Friedrich von Schmidt between 1882 and 1891. Inside, the basilica features dramatic murals by Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz, along with a magnificent organ boasting over 6,000 pipes. A highlight of the visit is the five-nave lower church, which remains one of the oldest and most atmospheric crypts in Central Europe, housing precious medieval stone carvings. As a functioning religious center and a primary tourist attraction, the cathedral embodies the rich religious and cultural heritage of the Baranya region.
