Đurđevac Sands (Croatia)

Weather…

The Đurđevac Sands (Đurđevački pijesci) are a unique geomorphological phenomenon in northern Croatia, often called the 'Croatian Sahara'. These inland sand dunes are remnants of a vast desert created by glacial sediments from the Drava River. Once a serious threat to local agriculture due to drifting sand, the area is now a strictly protected reserve that preserves specialized 'psammophilic' vegetation and rare insect species. Visitors can explore the undulating sandy landscape via designated educational trails that showcase the area's biodiversity. To enhance the desert experience, the town established a small sanctuary nearby home to several camels, which have become a major tourist attraction. The nearby Old Town fortress of Đurđevac features an interactive visitor center explaining the origin of the sands and the famous 'Legend of the Roosters' (Picokijada), a historical theatrical performance commemorating the town's resistance against Ottoman sieges.
