The Castle of Pécsvárad is one of Hungary's most significant historical monuments, originally functioning as a Benedictine Abbey. It was founded by King Saint Stephen in 1015 and played a key role in the organization of the Hungarian Church and state. Its first abbot was Saint Astrik, who brought the crown to Stephen from Pope Sylvester II. The abbey buildings were later fortified in the 14th century to protect against external attacks, which is when the complex gained its castle-like character. During the Ottoman occupation, the castle suffered severe damage, and its religious function ceased. Today's excavations and restorations have revealed the Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque layers of the building, including the 11th-century lower church preserved in its original state. Today, the castle operates as a museum and hotel, hosting cultural events and exhibitions showcasing medieval history. The castle walls offer a striking panoramic view of the Mecsek Mountains and the surrounding landscape.
