Slatina is a town in eastern Croatia, situated within the Virovitica-Podravina County at the intersection of the Drava valley and the slopes of Mount Papuk. First documented in 1297 under the name Zalathnuk, it served as a significant administrative and religious center during the medieval period. The town gained historical prominence in the 19th century when the first sparkling wine production in Croatia was established here in 1864 by the Schaumburg-Lippe family. Slatina's urban landscape is characterized by the late 19th-century Church of St. Joseph and several civic buildings from the Austro-Hungarian era. The local economy has traditionally relied on agriculture, timber processing, and the food industry, supported by the fertile Podravina plains. Modern Slatina continues to function as a vital regional hub for trade and services, maintaining a balance between its industrial heritage and its role as a cultural center for the surrounding rural districts.
