Visegrad Citadel (Hungary)

Weather…

The Visegrád Citadel is the most spectacular medieval structure in the Danube Bend, towering on a 333-meter-high rocky hilltop above the river. King Béla IV built it in the 1250s as part of the defensive system following the Mongol invasion, utilizing the dowry of his wife, Maria Laskaris. The castle's historical significance is highlighted by the famous 1335 Congress of Visegrád, where the Hungarian, Bohemian, and Polish monarchs formed an economic and political alliance. For centuries, the fortress served as a repository for the Holy Crown of Hungary, protecting the nation's most important relic from invaders. During the Ottoman wars, the castle suffered severe damage, and its archaeological exploration and restoration only began in the late 19th century. Today, the Citadel attracts visitors with interactive historical exhibitions, a wax museum, and an unparalleled panoramic view of the Danube Bend.
