The Cathedral of the Assumption and Saint Michael in Vác is a prominent landmark of Hungarian Classicist architecture. Commissioned by Bishop Christoph Migazzi and designed by the French architect Isidore Canevale, it was built between 1761 and 1777. The building stands on the site of earlier medieval cathedrals that were destroyed during the Ottoman occupation. Its facade is characterized by massive Corinthian columns and a monumental portico, reflecting the transition from Baroque to Neoclassicism. The interior features frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch and a high altar dedicated to the Visitation. As the seat of the Diocese of Vác, it remains an active religious center and a significant monument of the Enlightenment era in Hungary.
