Szigetszentmiklós serves as the administrative capital of Csepel Island, standing as one of Pest County's most populous cities with over 40,000 residents. Located south of Budapest, the municipality is globally recognized for a striking feat of engineering: the Lakihegy Radio Tower. Erected in 1933, this 314-meter-tall, cigar-shaped steel mast was once the tallest structure in Europe and continues to be Hungary's tallest construction. Economically, the town transformed radically during the mid-20th century, shifting from agricultural market gardening to heavy manufacturing, influenced by the nearby Csepel auto plants. Today, the expansive Leshegy Industrial Park drives the economy. Despite heavy urbanization, Szigetszentmiklós protects a memorable ecological gem along the Danube branch. The floating bog ecosystem, accessible via extensive wooden boardwalks, is one of Europe's largest floating moorlands, offering an unexpected haven for rare aquatic wildlife.
