Royal Palace of Gödöllő (Hungary)

Weather…

The Royal Palace of Gödöllő, also known as the Grassalkovich Palace, is the largest Baroque castle in Hungary and a significant monument of national heritage. Construction began in 1733 under the direction of Count Antal Grassalkovich I, who envisioned a U-shaped building that served as a prototype for several other Hungarian castles. Following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, the palace became the favorite summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Queen Elisabeth, who spent more than 2,000 days within its walls. The estate features a vast park, a unique Baroque theater, and a royal orangery, reflecting the opulence of the 18th and 19th centuries. During World War II and the subsequent Soviet occupation, the building suffered significant damage as it was used as barracks and a social welfare home. Restoration efforts began in the 1990s, transforming the palace into a premier cultural and tourist destination that hosts permanent exhibitions on the Gödöllő royal period and the Grassalkovich family history.
