Nagymaros is a town in Pest County, located on the left bank of the Danube, opposite the Visegrád citadel. Historically, it was an important settlement of the medieval Hungarian kings and received town rights in 1324 from Charles Robert. The town is famous for its scenic location in the Danube Bend and its proximity to the Börzsöny mountains. During the 20th century, it became known internationally due to the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros Dams project, which led to significant environmental protests. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, offering hiking trails and ferry connections to Visegrád. The town's architecture is dominated by the medieval Church of the Holy Cross, originally built in the 14th century.
