Holloko Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Hollókő Castle towers on a 400-meter-high rock in the Cserhát Mountains, overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage village of the same name. Construction of the fortress began in the second half of the 13th century, following the Mongol invasion, commissioned by the Ákos clan. Over the centuries, the castle survived several sieges and served as a strategically important border fortress in Nógrád County during the Ottoman occupation. In 1711, following the Rákóczi War of Independence, imperial troops partially destroyed it to prevent it from serving as a center of resistance. Extensive reconstruction took place at the end of the 20th century and in the 2020s, resulting in a new visitor center and interactive exhibitions. The walls offer a remarkable panorama of the Cserhát hills and the traditional architecture of the Old Village, showcasing a jewel of the medieval Hungarian castle system.
