Dregely Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Drégely Castle is situated in the northern part of the Börzsöny Mountains on a 444-meter-high volcanic peak, serving as the site of one of the most courageous resistances in Hungarian history. Built in the 13th century, the castle gained fame in 1552 when Captain György Szondy and his small garrison heroically defended the fort for four days against a massive Ottoman army. Ali Pasha's forces eventually leveled the fortress after the last of its defenders had fallen in battle. The castle was never rebuilt, and over the centuries it fell into ruin, but its memory became an integral part of Hungarian national identity. A foundation was established in 1989 to preserve the ruins, leading to significant conservation and excavation efforts. Today, the castle ruins are a popular hiking destination, offering views that can extend as far as the High Tatra peaks on clear days.
