Janos Hill (Hungary)

Weather…

Janos Hill is the highest point in Budapest, standing at 527 meters above sea level in the northern part of the Buda Hills. At its summit stands the Elizabeth Lookout, built between 1908 and 1910 in a Neo-Romanesque style based on the designs of architect Frigyes Schulek. The structure was named in honor of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, who visited the site in 1882. From the top level of the tower, under clear weather conditions, the peaks of the High Tatras are visible, along with a complete panorama of the capital and the Danube Bend. The accessibility of the peak was significantly improved in 1970 with the opening of the Zugliget Chairlift, which was the first passenger cableway of its kind in Hungary. Geologically, the hill is primarily composed of Triassic dolomite and limestone, and its slopes are covered by dense oak and beech forests that are part of the Buda Hills nature reserve.
