Wli Waterfalls (Ghana)

Weather…

Wli Waterfalls, also known locally as Agumatsa Falls, are located in the Volta Region of Ghana near the border with Togo and are acclaimed as the highest waterfalls in West Africa. The falls consist of two main parts: the lower fall, which is easily accessible via a flat forest trail, and the upper fall, which requires a strenuous hike up steep mountainous terrain. The water plunges from a total height of about 80 meters into a large plunge pool surrounded by dense tropical rainforest. The area is situated within the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to thousands of fruit bats that roost on the sheer rock faces adjacent to the falls. The hike to the base of the falls involves crossing the Agumatsa River multiple times over small bridges, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the Togo-Atakora mountain range. Wli holds spiritual significance for the local people and serves as a major hub for ecotourism in eastern Ghana. Protecting this ecosystem is crucial for maintaining the local water supply and preserving the unique flora and fauna that thrive in the mist of the cascading waters.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The waterfalls are located near the village of Wli in the Hohoe municipality, usually reached via a scenic drive from Accra or Ho. From the visitor center, a flat and well-marked path leads through the tropical forest towards the lower falls.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is typically during the wet season from May to October when the water volume is most impressive. However, the dry season gives easier hiking conditions and fewer mosquitoes for those planning to trek to the upper falls.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The walk to the lower falls is mostly level and suitable for most fitness levels, taking about 45 minutes through lush greenery. In contrast, the hike to the upper falls is much more strenuous, involving steep climbs and narrow, uneven forest paths.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip are essential, especially if you intend to tackle the steep upper section. It is highly recommended to bring waterproof bags for electronics, insect repellent, and plenty of drinking water for the humid trek.
🅿️
Parking
Ample parking space is generally available at the main entrance and visitor center near the village of Wli. For those traveling by public transport, local taxis and 'tro-tros' frequently run between Hohoe and the waterfall entrance area.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors should be cautious of slippery rocks near the falls and stay on marked trails to avoid getting lost in the dense forest. Swimming is usually permitted in the plunge pool, but caution is advised due to strong currents and submerged rocks.
⏱️
Time needed
Allow at least 2 to 3 hours for a relaxed visit to the lower falls, including time for photography and enjoying the scenery. If you plan to hike to the upper falls, the round trip can take 4 to 6 hours depending on your pace and physical condition.
