Amedzofe

Perched high in the Avatime Hills of the Volta Region, Amedzofe holds the title of the highest inhabited settlement in Ghana. This easy on the eye town attracts tourists with its refreshingly cool climate, providing a stark contrast to the tropical heat found in most of the country. Visitors come for the tranquility, the welcoming locals, and the panoramic panoramic views of the verdant valleys, which can stretch all the way to Lake Volta on clear days. The highlight of Amedzofe is hiking up Mount Gemi, which is crowned by a large cross erected by German missionaries in 1939. The short but steep climb rewards hikers with incredible 360-degree views. Another nearby attraction is the Ote Falls, a beautiful hidden waterfall that can be accessed via a newly constructed canopy walkway. Dining locally means enjoying traditional Ghanaian fare, while fresh mountain-grown fruits provide excellent snacks. Amedzofe is accessed via a highly scenic but winding and steep road from the city of Ho, making it a true off-the-beaten-path adventure. The town can be enjoyed year-round, but the clearest views from Mount Gemi are captured during the dry season (November to March), when the skies are not obscured by low clouds or heavy rainfall.
